Pickleball Lines on City Tennis Courts
The City of Calgary is in the process of lauching a pilot project that will determine whether or not pickleball lines should be added to all or some public tennis courts.
Earlier this week, Kurt Hanson, Director of Recreation, contacted Ron Riffel, the man responsible for overseeing the City’s tennis courts, and instructed him to run the pilot project. Riffel then contacted Pickleball Calgary for feedback regarding possible locations.
Since there are already six outdoor pickleball courts in southwest Calgary at the Oakridge Community Centre, Pickleball Calgary recommended talking to the players in northwest Calgary who had lobbied Alderman Bob Hawkesworth for pickleball lines earlier this year.
Ron Riffel then spoke with pickleball player Dominic Saliani who requested that lines be added to the tennis courts adjacent to Sir Winston Churchill Aquatic and Recreation Centre in the northwest. At this point, the City is seriously considering this location along with the Foothills Athletic Park which is next to the University of Calgary. A final decision is expected next week.
Regardless of the location, though, this is great news for pickleball and tennis players in Calgary. By adding pickleball lines to single use tennis facilities, the number of users will be substantially increased. Therefore the amount of money spent on maintaining and upgrading outdoor court space will also surely increase.
