Current Pricing Unsustainable
All pickleball programs currently operating in Calgary are built on a sustainability model. This model was created to ensure that pickleball is able to compete successfully with other sports for court space in Calgary’s high-rent, high-income marketplace.
Under this model, all revenues are divided into three equal pots: one for court rentals, one for staff and one for administration. This is done to ensure that all programs have stable space, qualified staff and competent administration.
In late 2009, while pickleball was new in Calgary, Racquet Network recommended an hourly rate for programs of $4.44 per hour. The recommendation was to stay at this price for a year and then analyze the results to determine whether or not that rate was sufficient to sustain pickleball in Calgary.
A year has now passed and it has become clear that this rate is insufficient to sustain pickleball and allow it to compete with other sports in Calgary. In fact, the hourly rate for pickleball programs must increase to $7.50 for NON-prime hours and to at least $12.50 for prime time hours if pickleball is to become a permanent fixture on the Calgary sporting landscape.
